When it comes to things to do in Essex, a cynic could say that you have little choice but to go to the pubs or a local event. However, a cursory glance around the Essex area reveals that there is much more to do in Essex than many people may have considered!
A place of fun and a location that manages to make seeing England incredibly simple, Essex can be a location to spend your time in whether you prefer the simple things in life or you just want to mess around and see what the world has for you in this region.
One thing that will always stand out, though, is the fact that Essex makes it so easy to witness some truly lovely scenery and rural areas that otherwise would have been forgotten about. If you are looking for things to do in Essex but don’t know where to start, we recommend that you try out any of the following local events to witness Essex for yourself;
1. Go For a Stroll
Essex is a lovely place with plenty of little rural bits to go and visit, but few come close to the class of the English country gardens you will find around here. The likes of Hyde Hall are well worth going to see because they offer a chance to see what England hides behind all of that bluster and madness. Instead, what you will find here is a wholly welcoming and friendly piece of terrain that is easy to navigate and provides you with a true glimpse of England outside of the big cities.
2. Go Village Spotting
One of the best things to do in Essex, though, is to go and see the various villages which are waiting for you. As a place with plenty of little villages to drive through as you head through the countryside, you can find it easy to see the real rural parts of England here. The little idyllic village settings will tend to grow in size and in style as you head further up north, but the Essex villages are worth going to see if you have access to transport and want to see somewhere unique and exciting.
Visit Southend-On-Sea, and you will get to see one of the finest things to do in Essex come to life in front of you. A vibrant town with plenty to see and lots to enjoy, you can find that this is one of the more developed settings in the area. If you fancy taking in a spot of local sport, then be sure to check out the local football team: Southend United. The whole area is deeply welcoming and a lot of fun to navigate if you just want to see a nice picturesque little town come to life.
4. The Wildlife Trust
A popular choice for things to do in Essex also includes the excellent Essex Wildlife Trust. A great place to be, this was founded in the late 1950s and since then stands for a total of 87 unique reserves. This ensures that you can head from the Colchester HQ right through to the likes of Havering and even Greater London! For a place that covers many resorts in the local area, you’ll find that spotting the wildlife and getting to make the most of your settings is easier with the help of the Wildlife Trust when here!

A fine place to go and visit if you like old-school, historical buildings, Naze Tower stands at a lovely 86ft and can be a good place to go and see if you like to witness old buildings that carry ancient architecture. With a lighthouse that has stood since 1720 posted here, it becomes much easier to enjoy the splendor and the beauty of Naze Tower as it makes it nice and simple to enjoy the depth, clarity and style that this lovely location throws at you. This is a six story solution that can really give Essex that vital charm!
A popular little place to come and check out, this massive parish is a must-see for anyone who is into this kind of thing. You will find that the large parish is also based near the famous airport, so if you are just arriving in Essex and want to find some nice things to do this can be a good place to start off with. The number of low-cost flights arriving here means that if you want to come and see the various things to do in Essex, you can find a way to land here very cheaply!

A fine sight of the old Imperial power that once dominated and gripped the UK, Hadleigh Castle has stood since the 1200s and has been a large example to many other castles as to what can occur when something stands for too long. Based near the town centre you should have no problems getting here, and from there you can take a tour around the area to see what used to stand here. It’s one of the most impressive structures in this neck of the woods, so make sure you come here and check it out for yourself!
8. Audley End House
This Jacobean mansion house (mainly) built in the early 17th century is a must-see for all architecture fanatics. You can visit it and experience the history of this historic building. But not only the house itself, also the gardens are worth a visit for a day with the kids or a romantic stroll. And in case you like horses, there’s even more good news for you. You can get a taste of what the resident horses’ daily schedule looks like and watch them perform their training.
9. The Old Bunker
The last event we recommend you check out is the Secret Nuclear Bunker “Kelvedon Hatch”. Built in a panic back in the day when it looked like we could be heading for the end of days, this massive bunker is worth visiting purely for the historical context that it holds.
